After multiple pregnancies or significant or very rapid weight loss, sagging breasts (ptosis) are the result of the skin loosening up, with a loss of volume and the areola moving lower down. The breasts hang low and the chest flattens out the top – saggy boobs, in short.

So are you thinking about a breast lift to right your sagging breasts?  Doctissimo gives you all the details on this surgical procedure.

Why do breasts sag?

Both small and large breasts can be affected, and as most women are aware, there are differing degrees of this ptosis and it can kick-in at any age.

  • Younger women with larger breasts get sagging due to gravity and age – the weight of the breast and decreasing skin elasticity causes the breasts sag.
  • In middle-aged women, the breasts begin to sag as hormone levels go down and milk glands shrink, as well as a deterioration in skin quality and the consequences of changing breast sizes during pregnancies.
  • In post-menopausal women, it’s simply the years of good old gravity and the lack of elasticity of the aged skin that bring about sagging breasts.

The cosmetic surgery technique used to correct sagging breasts known as mastopexy, involves reshaping the skin and mammary glands so as to lift the breast tissue and nipples back up towards the collarbone – to their rightful place.

The breast lift procedure

Correcting sagging breasts with surgery involves the reconstruction of their rounded shape and repositioning of the nipples to the right place.

  • When breasts sag, they have to be sculpted and the skin has to be reshaped over the mammary gland. This technique requires the removal of excess skin so the skin of the breast is tightened.
  • If sagging breasts have also lost volume and the mammary gland has wilted, then breast implants would also be used in order to give an overall boost of volume. These implants are usually placed behind the pectoral muscle.  (In some cases, implants are enough to rectify the problem without further surgical intervention.)
  • Finally, the nipples are then repositioned at the desired height.
