Fruit acid peels: Regenerative face care for thirsty skin

Fruit acids, the simplified name for AHAs (abbreviation of the off-putting term alpha-hydroxyacids), are substances which have a chemical effect that is designed to rebuild and renew skin for a healthy, beautiful glow.

If the word “fruit” makes you think of gentle, natural products, think again. In fact, these are real, unadulterated acids, with a more or less corrosive effect which  strips the dead cells from the surface of the skin when applied in the form of face peels. Present in numerous fruits including green apples, lemons, oranges, gooseberries, bitter almonds, honey and fermented milk, AHAs are not a new ingredient in beauty. These intensive skincare essentials have been used in beauty regimes since time began.

Your complexion is radiant again!

You can use fruit acid peels as a skin repair remedy for a few months, applying them regularly so as to optimise the effects. They hydrate and exfoliate the epidermis until your thirsty skin becomes smooth and supple again. With their resurfacing and exfoliating properties, these peels chemically reduce cohesion between cells in the corneal layer of the skin (keratolytic action), easing away the dead skin which makes your complexion look dull.

The intensive action of the fruit acids on dead skin is often accompanied by a hot, stinging sensation. The peel stimulates cell renewal in the skin and smoothes its surface while reconstructing it underneath. Results are visible to the naked eye very quickly, and your complexion will be radiant and free from fine lines and wrinkles.

To boost these effects, products based on fruit acids must contain a sufficient concentration in AHAs. The more acidic the product’s pH, the higher the quantity of fruit acids and the more effective they become. Products which meet the criteria for effectiveness in terms of AHA concentration are available in pharmacies and in cosmetic shops. They usually contain a pH acidity of 2 to 4 with a concentration in AHAs of between 4-15%.

These products are sold in many pharmacies but are generally prescribed by doctors. Their principle active ingredients are powerful and it is best to be properly informed about their usage before trying out these products. You should be aware of the risks, so that you know and understand the possible side-effects which can often be unpleasant. On the other hand, once you have found the right product for your skin with the help of a dermatologist, you won’t be able to do without it!
