You need to keep warm, but without looking like a short-legged sausage dog or a Sunday roast beef, so we’ve got tips about the best style for your body shape.
This winter’s jacket trend is the padded Aspen, Gstaadt city/ski look, but you need to remember a few basic body shape/clothing style rules to make sure you are looking your best this winter.
Winter ski jacket styles if you're small and/or curvy
Let’s not hide from the truth: the winter ski-style jacket is thick and enveloping – not the best choice if you’re size 16 and beyond, or if you’re under 5 feet. But if you really do need one for snowy escapades or to stay on fashion’s cutting edge… you need to keep the following in mind:
Yes to:
- Well fitted models, in dark mat colours to that you don’t get mistaken for a snowman!
- A belted model if only you have a well-defined waist ;
- A jacket style that flares out to the hem, which will give the illusion of a longer line and disguise any extra curves on the thighs or bum.
No to:
- Fantasy (gold, silver, big motifs or flowers…), thick padding, light colours and shiny or flashy materials – for the simple and good reason that the more you go towards the light and flashy, the more you will accentuate your body width and length.
- Fur trimmings (hood, collar, hem, sleeves) which will give more volume, exactly what you should be trying to avoid.
- Cropped jackets, which will give a short, round, very squashed and crumpled look.
Winter ski jacket styles if you're A-shaped
If your body is typically A-shaped : slender shoulders, small breasts and large hips, your number one priority is to even out your silhouette and reduce the difference between the top half and bottom half of your body. To do this, you need to provide volume to the top of the body and camouflage the heavier bottom half, namely your hips.
Yes to:
- Long, flared lines, to give the illusion of a slimmer figure, disguising curves around the bum and thighs;
- Added details (fur, hood, fashionable clips and zips) which will draw attention to the top of the body.
No to:
- Short, fitted models – the best way to make your rounded bum and hips stand out;
- Styles that accentuate your body’s imbalances and fit tightly to the top and puff out at the bottom, or anything without sleeves – to be avoided at all times!
