When the temperature plummets, skin dehydration and chafing will not be far behind. Even before the first signs of discomfort, you can adopt some strategies for beating the cold to stay beautiful even in the depths of winter.
Be careful on cold days, as your skin will need extra special care: it doesn’t like bad weather. Gusts of wind, the sun and snow all mean trouble for your skin and the tip of your nose and ears will turn pink – cute perhaps, but hardly glam.
So before get onto the ski slopes for the first time, you need to think about preventing problems associated with skin dehydration. Lipids in the natural protective barrier of the skin will not form as easily, so gaps will form in these cementing elements between cells, thereby letting hydration escape. This is why the first sensation of any chafing or drying must be taken seriously.
Hydrating skin care for winter
To go outside over winter, you get wrapped up – and guess what, your skin needs to be wrapped up too! Change your skincare routine and start using richer, more moisturising products.
Go straight for ranges of products labelled ‘for very dry skin’, or creams called cold cream, which contain large quantities of water and a lot of oil. These products release active hydrating agents onto the surface of the epidermis and leave a light film, which will put a stop to any moisture escaping.
Every morning, your skin should be nourished and hydrated as much as possible in order to give this natural protection a boost. A handy tip for beating the cold is to try and avoid water or soap-based make-up removers. Instead use lotion-based cleansing wipes, which are easier to carry around with you for one thing. Banish all alcohol-based toners as well; they’ll dry your skin out even more.
